How often do you need a dental check-up and cleaning?

Published by Dr Smile Dental Care, Parel · Last updated · 4 min read

The short answer

Most people benefit from a dental check-up and professional cleaning about every six months. The right interval, though, depends on your risk: people with healthy teeth and gums may go longer, while those with gum disease, frequent cavities, diabetes or who smoke may need visits every three to four months. Your dentist should set an interval that suits you.

Where does 'every six months' come from?

Six months is a widely used, sensible default. It is often enough to catch decay and gum problems while they are small and simple to treat, and to remove tartar before it builds up.

Clinical guidelines in several countries recommend tailoring the interval to the individual instead of applying one rule to everyone — for example, UK guidance suggests adults be seen anywhere from every 3 months to every 2 years depending on their risk, and children at least once a year. In practice, your dentist looks at your history and current mouth and recommends what suits you.

Who may need more frequent visits?

You may be advised to come every three to four months if you:

  • Have gum disease, or have been treated for it
  • Get new cavities often
  • Smoke or use tobacco in any form
  • Have diabetes, or a condition or medicine that causes a dry mouth
  • Are pregnant (gums can become more inflamed)
  • Wear braces or aligners, or have many crowns, bridges or implants
  • Build up tartar quickly

What happens at a dental check-up?

A check-up is more than a quick look. A dentist will typically ask about any changes in your health or medicines, then check:

  • Each tooth for decay, cracks and the condition of old fillings or crowns
  • The gums for bleeding, swelling and pockets around the teeth
  • The tongue, cheeks, palate and floor of the mouth for any unusual patches or ulcers
  • Your bite and any jaw discomfort, grinding or wear
  • X-rays, when needed, to see between teeth and below the gum

What does a professional cleaning do that brushing can't?

Plaque that isn't removed hardens into tartar (calculus) within days. Once hardened, it can't be brushed or flossed away, and it gives bacteria a rough surface to cling to — irritating the gums and leading to bleeding and, over time, gum disease.

A professional cleaning, also called scaling and polishing, removes tartar from around and between the teeth and polishes away surface stains. It's quick, usually done in one sitting, and teeth may feel a little sensitive for a day or two afterwards.

If nothing hurts, do I still need a check-up?

Yes. Most dental problems don't hurt in the early stages. Decay can spread inside a tooth for months before it causes pain, and gum disease often causes no pain until teeth start to loosen. By the time something hurts, treatment is usually bigger. Regular check-ups are about finding problems while they are small.

What if I haven't been to a dentist in years?

You're not alone, and it's never too late to start again. Many people put off the dentist because of worry about pain, cost or being judged. A good first visit is simply a conversation and a careful look: the dentist finds out what's bothering you, examines your teeth and gums, takes X-rays if needed and explains what they see.

If several things need attention, treatment can be planned in stages — anything painful or urgent first, the rest at a pace that suits you. You should always get an explanation of your options and an estimate before treatment begins.

What can I do between visits?

Home care makes the biggest difference to how often you need treatment:

  • Brush twice a day for about two minutes with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Spit, don't rinse, after brushing, to keep the fluoride on your teeth.
  • Clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes.
  • Limit how often you have sugary foods and drinks.
  • Avoid tobacco in all forms.
